Why Recycle Scrap Metal in Singapore?
Scrap metal collection is often thought of as just a way to clear space or make a little money back on old materials. But recycling metal also matters for a bigger reason: metal is a limited natural resource, and how we handle it has a real effect on the environment. Here's why it's worth recycling, not discarding, your scrap metal.
Metal Is a Finite Resource
Every tonne of steel, copper or aluminium starts as ore mined from the ground, and ore deposits are limited. Singapore itself has no metal mines or mineral resources — virtually all raw and refined metal used here is imported. At the same time, demand for metal keeps growing: construction, electronics, vehicles and infrastructure all depend on a steady supply of copper, aluminium, steel and other metals. Recycling what's already in circulation reduces reliance on new mining to meet that demand.
Metal Can Be Recycled Again and Again
Unlike paper or plastic, which lose quality each time they're processed, metals like steel, aluminium and copper can be recycled repeatedly without losing their properties. A piece of scrap steel or copper collected today can be melted down and reused in new products indefinitely, which is part of why scrap metal has real, lasting value rather than being a one-time-use material.
How Metal Recycling Protects the Environment
Less mining. Every tonne of scrap metal reused is a tonne that doesn't need to be freshly mined, which reduces the land disturbance, water use and habitat impact that mining causes elsewhere.
Far less energy. Producing metal from recycled scrap generally uses much less energy than extracting and refining it from raw ore. Recycling aluminium, for example, is widely reported by industry bodies to use up to 95% less energy than producing new aluminium from ore.
Lower carbon emissions. Less energy used in mining, smelting and long-distance transport of raw ore translates directly into lower emissions.
Less landfill waste. Metal that's collected and recycled doesn't end up taking up space in landfill, where it can take decades to break down.
Safer handling of hazardous materials. Items like batteries, circuit boards and air-conditioners can contain materials that are harmful if dumped improperly. Recycling them through a proper channel keeps those materials out of soil and waterways.
Singapore's Push Toward Recycling
Singapore's Zero Waste Masterplan, run by the National Environment Agency (NEA), set a national target of a 70% overall recycling rate by 2030. Singapore has limited land for landfill — Semakau Landfill is the only one — which makes reducing waste and recycling more of what can be reused a genuinely practical necessity, not just an environmental ideal.
What Happens to the Scrap Metal We Collect
At Omani Hardware Trading, metal we collect is sorted, cleaned and prepared for reuse or export at our recycling facility, in line with Singapore's environmental standards. Rather than being discarded, it's put back into circulation — which is the whole point of recycling it in the first place. See what we accept on our What We Buy page.
